Golden Hour Magic at South Mountain Preserve | Phoenix, Arizona
As a photographer, there's nothing quite like the magic of golden hour – that time just before sunset when everything seems to glow with warmth and softness. I had the pleasure of capturing some beautiful moments with Maria and Barry at South Mountain Preserve in Phoenix, Arizona. We decided to keep things simple and accessible by shooting just off the parking lot near the visitor's center. My goal was to make sure that the location was easy for them to navigate while still feeling immersed in the stunning beauty that South Mountain has to offer.
The light was absolutely perfect as we began the session. The sun, low on the horizon, cast long, soft shadows and bathed the desert landscape in a golden hue. There’s something about the vastness of the mountain ranges and the richness of the desert that makes for the perfect backdrop, and Maria and Barry were simply glowing in the light. The atmosphere was peaceful, the air crisp, and everything seemed to align for a perfect session. Even though we were just a stone’s throw away from the parking lot, it felt as if we were in the heart of nature itself. The surrounding desert plants, the distant peaks, and the expansive sky all contributed to a feeling of serenity. I always love how the desert can feel so isolated yet so connected to everything around it, and that energy was definitely present during our time together.
Capturing the quiet moments between Maria and Barry was truly special – the way they interacted with each other, their laughter, and the way the light wrapped around them made for some truly magical shots. It’s these moments, these quiet, intimate connections, that remind me why I love my job so much.
If you're ever in the Phoenix area and looking for a spot to photograph, South Mountain is an absolute gem. It’s got that perfect mix of accessibility and awe-inspiring natural beauty. And if you time it right – like we did – the golden hour will make everything look even more extraordinary.
Thank you, Maria and Barry, for letting me capture these moments with you!
